For mechanical moonphase watches

Set the moon.
Keep the rhythm.

Most classic moonphase displays can be set from the last full moon. Use this live count as your guide, then follow your calibre’s manual.

  1. 01

    Check the lockout window

Find the prohibited correction hours in your exact watch manual, then move the hands to a time the manufacturer marks as safe.

  2. 02

    Find a perfect full moon

Press the moonphase corrector until the full moon sits precisely in the centre of the aperture.

  3. 03

    Advance — presses

Move the display forward one day at a time from that full-moon reference.

  4. 04

    Finish with the time

Set the date and local time last, observing AM/PM so the calendar changes at midnight—not noon.

Your manual has the final word. Corrector positions, lockout hours, setting order, and even the reference phase vary by movement. If the calibre is unknown, stop and ask the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker.
